This summer, our young mentees and mentors from the STAND and PUSH programs traveled to Mexico for the Black August Summer Institute – a transformative experience hosted at Mud & Lotus Baja. This beautiful, palm tree-laden ranch set the scene for unforgettable experiences blending education, adventure, and personal growth.

A Setting That Inspires

With its vast expanses and serene surroundings, Mud & Lotus Baja offers an ideal environment for learning and reflection. The ranch’s peaceful atmosphere was palpable, and mentees and mentors soaked in the calm.

Activities and Learning

The program schedule was packed with various activities designed to challenge the participants physically, emotionally, and intellectually. From horseback riding on the trails to practicing yoga at dawn, the days were filled with new and exciting experiences. Participants engaged in hands-on learning sessions about sustainable farming and CPR, providing them with practical skills and knowledge.

A significant component of the program involved deep dives into Revolutionary Black history, where mentees discussed important figures and events that have shaped the landscape of civil rights and social justice. These discussions were not only informative but also empowering for the young attendees.

Emotional and Social Growth

One of the most poignant aspects of the institute was watching the participants form strong bonds of friendship and brotherhood. They shared stories, supported each other through challenges, and celebrated each other’s achievements, creating memories that will last a lifetime. The impact of these interactions was evident in their newfound confidence and self-pride as they tackled each new task and navigated every hurdle together.

Community Engagement

Interaction with the local community was also a highlight. Participants visited local markets, engaged with residents, and learned about the cultural and economic aspects of the area. These experiences enriched their understanding of global citizenship and the importance of cultural sensitivity.

The Impact of Support

None of this would have been possible without the generous support of our donors and partners. Your contributions directly impact the lives of young people, providing them with opportunities that have the power to alter the course of their futures. We are immensely grateful for the donors who support our mission.
